On this page we are going to look at the Evolution 255mm mitre saw. This is a step up from the smaller R210SMS and offers a lot of features for the money. It is a fairly big saw and will need some space. If you have the space and need a versatile mitre saw then this is definitely a great buy and often one of the best sliding mitre saw deals on Amazon.
The latest range of Evolution saws are very modern looking with the black casing and orange colouring and this is no exception. It will look good set up in the garage and on site. The top of the sliding mechanism has a nice tidy black colour which looks good and robust but also protects the sliding mechanism from damage.
The Features
Features wise this model has a lot to offer which makes it a good option if you are looking for a sliding mitre saw that can tackle a lot of different types of job easily with little messing about and different parts. The cutting capacity is large and the blade will cut a number of types of material. Read on to see the other features on offer.
The 2000 watt Motor
The motor supplied is a 2000 watt electric motor with plenty of punch for heavy use and cutting tough materials. This is a significant step up from the R210SMS+ plus which has a 1500 watt motor. This is run from a 230 volt mains connection which will run from a plug at home but will not be able to be used on a lot of sites that need a 110 volt power source.
Cutting Capacity
The Evolution R255SMS Plus has a large cutting capacity, the sliding mechanism make it good for wider cuts.
It will cut up to 300mm in width which is good for a range of planks.
Maximum capacity is 300 by 80 millimetres which will easily cut through 2 x 4 lengths of timber.
Cutting Angles
The single bevel action gives a range of angles from 0 to 45 degrees. The mitre angles are up to 50 degrees on both the left and right of giving a great range of cutting angles and when combined with the bevel angles. The mitre angles can be set with a pre set lock in at 0, 15,22.5, 30 and 45 degrees. These are very common cutting angles and can be set in a second.
The laser supplied helps you view the cuts and get the angles lined up well in awkward light. It is a pretty standard feature on a worksaw at this level. There are better cutting guide systems out there on the Dewalt and some other more comprehensive laser guides.
The Blade
The blade supplied is a very versatile 28 tooth multi material blade. The R255-TCT mitre saw blade will cut wood, aluminium and plastic. Great for lots of jobs as well as carpentry, it will cut through copper and push fit pipes with ease leaving you with a clean and accurate cut for connecting the pipes. The bore size is 25.4 mm in case you do need to buy a different blade. This is a big plus for this model as it will do a lot of jobs out of the box without carrying around spare blades.
Portability
It is not the lightest mitre saw available and it is quite big but it is well designed to make it easy to move around. It has a built in carry handle which makes it easy to load in to the car or carry around a site. If you are using this for the workshop then it won’t be an issue. At just over 15 kilos it is quite heavy but it needs to be big to cover such a range of cuts.
That heaviness of course gives this an advantage over other similar types of tool like a hand held or smaller portable circular saw that would be far less sturdy and stable.
Safety
There are some good safety on this model. A dust collection bag is supplied but it can also be connected up to a dust collection machine via the port which is handy when you are making a lot of cuts.
The blade cover is sturdy and automatically closes as the saw is lifted up from cutting to protect you from the exposed blade. The table is fairy wide and there is a clamp supplied to hold material in place while it is being cut. This is an ideal mitre saw to have on a stand so that you are standing in a good position to cut and the stand will help support longer pieces of wood. Evolution offer a mitre saw stand which a good complimentary buy with this model.
3 Year Warranty
The Evolution 3 year warranty is a really good add on. It gives peace of mind when you buy the saw.
It is not the most expensive mitre saw on the market but it still a significant investment for a tool that you will want to last for many year on many jobs.
What The Customers Say
As with a lot of Evolution products there is a lot of positive feedback from many happy customers. This model gets great feedback on Amazon and Screwfix. This backed with a 3 year warranty makes it a good buy.
Versatility
Great for a number of woodworking, plumbing and tiling jobs on building sites. A really good all rounder for a general builder or DIY enthusiast that has a wide range of jobs to get done.
Whether you’re making cuts outdoors for decking, indoors for plumbing in a new bathroom or anything else, this is a versatile machine for every job.
Even if you’re looking for an occasional use steel saw, this makes easy work of minor metal cuts compared to other drop saw brands for sale.
Great Value
The R255SMS+ competes with many saws in terms of features that are a lot more expensive. When you need a lot of tools for a job this is maybe not the cheapest, but does offer great value in a high quality mitre saw.
Easy to Assemble
It has been noted how easy this is to assemble. Out of the box it can be set up with a blade that can tackle most jobs making it fast and easy to work with.
Conclusion
To sum it up this is a great buy if you have the space to store it. It is a large saw that can cut a wide range of materials, angles and sizes of timbers. If you’re looking for a small chop saw, try the R210SMS+ 210mm option instead.
Competing with many more expensive saw it holds its own in terms of customer feedback. It’s not the sort of tool you’ll find all year round in B&Q, Wickes and Homebase due to its size, but does offer a lot of features for a very reasonable price.
Two stand out features are the long warranty and the multi material saw blade.
All in all a great mitre saw from Evolution.
